Judge declares Trump's deployment of troops to DC unlawful

Federal Judge Rules Trump’s Troop Deployment to D.C. Illegal

A federal judge recently ruled against President Donald Trump’s order to deploy National Guard troops to Washington, D.C. The ruling came after a lawsuit was filed by the district’s attorney general, reflecting concerns over the militarization of the streets amidst rising crime.

Trump’s decision to send troops aimed to address increasing violent crime in D.C., but critics argue it was a strategic move to intimidate political opponents.

Judge Gia Cobb stated that Trump’s action exceeded his authority, specifically prohibiting military involvement in “non-military crime prevention missions” without a formal request from local officials. While Cobb’s ruling was a setback for the administration, she allowed a 21-day period for an appeal.

Attorney General Brian Schwalb expressed strong disapproval, suggesting that using the military for domestic law enforcement could create a troubling precedent where presidents bypass state autonomy.

In response, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller criticized the ruling, asserting that it undermines the president’s role as commander-in-chief and poses risks to the republic’s functionality. Meanwhile, the White House press secretary characterized Schwalb’s lawsuit as an attempt to destabilize the president’s efforts against crime.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, while acknowledging the deployment’s role in reducing violent crime, faced backlash from fellow Democrats for her comments. The ongoing conversation around military involvement in domestic issues remains a contentious point of debate.
