House passes resolution denouncing socialism as Zohran Mamdani comes for Trump meeting

House Condemns Socialism Amid Mamdani’s Meeting with Trump

WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives recently passed a resolution condemning what it termed the “horrors of socialism.” This event occurred just hours before New York’s mayor-elect, Zoran Mamdani — a democratic socialist — was set to meet President Trump at the White House.

The resolution was put forth by Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar (R-Fla.) and saw a bipartisan vote of 285-98, with all opposing votes coming from Democrats, two of whom had also supported the resolution.

The text of the resolution explicitly states that “Congress condemns socialism in all its forms and opposes the implementation of socialist policies in the United States.” Salazar, whose parents fled Cuba after Fidel Castro’s rise to power, highlighted the significance of this stance.

Interestingly, among the lawmakers who backed Mamdani are prominent supporters of socialism, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

The vote came shortly after Mamdani had arrived at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, preparing for his 3 p.m. meeting with Trump. The mayor-elect mentioned his intention to discuss strategies for making New York City more affordable.

Previously, Trump had indicated plans to reduce the city’s federal funding if “my little communist” was elected, yet he expressed confidence on Friday during an interview that the discussions would be “very amicable.” He remarked, “I think we’re going to do well.”

Mamdani shared his belief in exploring every possible means to ensure the city’s affordability, noting that misconceptions exist between the president and the Democratic side of the aisle. He stated at a press event that, while disagreements are common, collaboration is essential.

During the resolution debate, Rep. Nicole Malliotakis from Staten Island drew on personal history, explaining how her family fled Cuba to escape the very socialist policies she claims Mamdani supports. She voiced her concern that his agenda resembles control over production and the potentially abolishment of private property rights.

Malliotakis argued that there is a clear parallel between socialism and communism, directing her remarks towards her colleagues and referencing historical failures of socialist governments.

The resolution further cited the failures of past regimes such as those of Lenin, Stalin, Mao Zedong, and Castro, which it argued led to severe humanitarian crises, including starvation and mass murder.

To illustrate the gravity of socialist failures, the document emphasized the plight of 3.5 million individuals starving in North Korea, the history of concentration camps in the Soviet Union, and the tragic famine during China’s Great Leap Forward, which allegedly resulted in millions of deaths.

A complementary resolution was introduced in the Senate by Sen. Rick Scott (R-Florida). Both resolutions emerged in early September, prior to the New York mayoral election and following Mamdani’s win in the Democratic primary.
