Trump Sets Thanksgiving Deadline for Zelenskyy to Decide on Peace Agreement, With U.S. Support at Stake

Trump Pressures Ukraine for Peace Deal with Russia

President Donald Trump is urging Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to consider a peace agreement aimed at ending the conflict with Russia, and has set what appears to be a hard deadline for this decision, potentially leading to serious consequences for Ukraine.

The U.S. has voiced concerns over certain arms shipments and intelligence activities. Reports suggest that Zelenskiy could face pressure if he doesn’t actively pursue Trump’s peace initiative. This deadline—rumored to be tied to the Thanksgiving holiday—was mentioned during Trump’s discussion with Brian Kilmeade on Fox News Radio. Although Trump indicated that the deadline might be flexible, he emphasized, “it’s Thursday.”

In a recent statement, President Zelenskiy expressed his willingness to negotiate over the terms laid out in the proposed peace deal, despite opposition he has encountered from other European leaders. He mentioned that the entire Ukrainian government is addressing the specifics, but also conveyed in an interview that the U.S. seems to be placing Ukraine in a position where it must choose between “losing dignity or jeopardizing an important partnership.”

On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin commented that Trump’s proposal could be “the basis” for a conclusive peace agreement.

A U.S. official stated, “We generally do not discuss sensitive negotiations that may or may not be in progress.” They added that Trump is working with both nations to bring an expedited end to what they described as a protracted conflict resulting in too many needless casualties. The official remarked, “Had he been president, this situation would not have unfolded.”

Meanwhile, President Zelenskiy is navigating a corruption investigation involving Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Service. His business associate has been arrested on charges of laundering a significant sum of money from a Ukrainian nuclear energy firm.

Another U.S. official indicated to the Daily Caller News Foundation that there were expectations for Ukraine to agree to a peace deal, pointing out that any changes regarding this would ultimately be determined by the president himself.

Zelenskiy is also working to strengthen support within Europe. Recently, he signed an agreement with France to acquire 100 Rafale fighter jets for Ukraine’s air force, which includes anti-aircraft systems, drones, and additional munitions.

The Trump administration is attempting to delegate direct military assistance to Ukraine to European partners. In a collaborative effort, NATO has agreed to purchase arms from the U.S. and ship them to Ukraine in return for Washington facilitating direct aid.
