South Florida overwhelms UAB shortly after a stabbing event

UAB Football Incident Before Game

On Saturday, shortly before a scheduled game, two football players from the University of Alabama at Birmingham were stabbed at the team’s training facility in Birmingham, Alabama.

It was confirmed by university officials that both players were attacked by a teammate. They are currently in stable condition at a local hospital. The identities of the victims and the player who has been taken into custody have not been disclosed yet.

The game was set to start at 3 p.m. ET, with South Florida ultimately clinching a 48-18 victory.

A check of online records from Jefferson County Jail indicated that Daniel Israel Mincey, 20, was arrested by UAB Campus Police shortly after noon that same day. He faces charges associated with “Aggravated Assault (A-M) Attempted Murder.” However, the university has not confirmed whether Mincey is the player involved in the stabbing.

According to the UAB roster, Mincey is a redshirt freshman who transferred to UAB after one season at Kentucky.

Initially, there were concerns about whether the game would still take place, but a spokesperson later confirmed that it would go ahead as planned. “We are relieved to say that the two players involved are in stable condition,” the spokesperson stated. “Our thoughts are with them and their families as they recover. The suspect remains in custody, and the investigation continues.”

During the game, USF’s quarterback, Byram Brown, had an impressive performance, passing for 353 yards and throwing five touchdowns. UAB did hold a brief lead of 10-7 after the first quarter, but USF surged ahead with 27 unanswered points.

Brown highlighted the game with a 60-yard touchdown pass to Mudia Reuben right at the start of the third quarter, extending USF’s lead to 24-10. Meanwhile, UAB’s quarterback, Jalen Kitna managed 230 passing yards but threw three interceptions, which proved costly for the team.
