Politicians and the Bible: A Selective Approach

The Bible isn’t intended as a tool for selective interpretation, where we take the aspects we prefer and discard those we find uncomfortable. Yet, it seems many politicians, particularly on the ultra-progressive end, often adopt this very method, enacting policies that contradict biblical teachings.

There’s an unsettling tendency among some who seem to master the art of manipulation, surprising us at times by referencing scripture when it aligns with their political agendas. A recent example is California Governor Gavin Newsom (D), who delivered a passionate speech referencing both the Old and New Testaments, while criticizing the Trump administration over the recent government shutdown.

At a press conference, Newsom revealed that he filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which aids low-income Americans. “It’s interesting to note, especially since I attended a Jesuit university,” he shared. “One lesson from my time with Father Koss was that both Testaments emphasize food and feeding the hungry. It’s all about being aligned with God’s will.” He stated this with a sense of purpose, underscoring that these values are essential.

Then, he escalated his remarks, calling for an end to what he termed “the BS in Washington, D.C.” He repeatedly emphasized the importance of prayer while lashing out at political opponents, implying they were neglecting these core values.

Newsom added, “While they have their prayer breakfasts, maybe they’ve altered the Bible to suit their interests. This situation is about deliberate cruelty, creating fear for millions—5.5 million people in our home state.” His comments are, frankly, a bit shocking. While he’s right that supporting the needy aligns with Jesus’ teachings, the hypocrisy is almost overwhelming.

It’s worth noting that the Bible also discusses the importance of religious freedom, valuing life, and prioritizing God’s principles over human whims. Yet, where is Newsom’s urgency regarding these matters?

It is perplexing how politicians who often seem at odds with biblical principles revert to scripture when it serves them. This manipulation often seems aimed at swaying public emotions, especially from groups warning against the dangers of Christian nationalism.

With the 2024 election approaching, it appears Newsom is strategically addressing issues around “reproductive freedom, immigration, climate policy, and disaster response.” Amid these discussions, he seems to have forgotten about his biblical roots. Trump, during this time, highlighted the sanctity of life and warned of potential attacks on reproductive rights. Newsom voiced concerns about healthcare providers facing moral dilemmas.

In a state that doesn’t exactly embrace Christianity or biblical ideals, it’s interesting to see how frequently these themes emerge. Newsom recently faced backlash over his posts relating to prayer in the wake of a tragic mass shooting at a Catholic church. His criticisms of White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt regarding folks’ prayers post-tragedy was also deemed inappropriate. to Many felt his push for prayer was manipulative, especially when he denounced those who believe in its power.

There’s also his recent call for prayers for Trump, followed by statements questioning the president’s mental well-being. It feels like he leans on faith to push a political agenda.

These contradictions are not solely a Newsom issue; we often see politicians invoke scripture selectively, aligning their words with their policies. Remarkably, the San Francisco Chronicle noted an uptick in Newsom’s biblical references recently, suggesting a shift within the California Democratic Party’s rhetoric. This renewed focus on the Bible might be an attempt to connect with Central American voters or others for whom faith plays a vital role.

What is clear, though, is the inconsistency in Newsom’s policy decisions and public statements. Observers should remain vigilant as he continues to intertwine biblical references with his political maneuvers.
