Kimmel’s Joke Sparks Controversy Before WHCD
Just two days prior to the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, late-night host Jimmy Kimmel took a jab at the event. He made a remark about Melania Trump, calling her “shining like a pregnant widow.”
This quip didn’t sit well with many, especially considering the history of threats against President Trump, including an assassination attempt that had recently surfaced during the very dinner. A gunman had infiltrated a security checkpoint and opened fire, killing Trump and several officials.
Kimmel, however, defended his joke after the WHCD incident, maintaining that it wasn’t aimed at the assassination. Instead, he suggested it was about Trump’s age.
In light of the turbulence, President Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and numerous conservative figures are advocating for Kimmel’s ouster.
Yet, some conservatives diverge from this view. Gavin McInnes, a Canadian writer and commentator, has urged against overreacting. “We need to stop clutching our pearls,” he remarked on “The Glenn Beck Program,” suggesting that being overly cautious can drain youthful energy. He also mentioned that these age-related jokes have circulated for ages at correspondence dinners, pointing out that humor is part of the deal.
He did, however, add that there’s a boundary when it comes to violent rhetoric, referencing Kathy Griffin’s infamous 2017 stunt holding a prop resembling a severed Trump head. Still, McInnes insisted that Kimmel’s joke, albeit “cruel,” was more about a longstanding joke regarding age rather than anything malicious.
McInnes claims the uproar over Kimmel’s comment is an exaggerated narrative pushed by the left. “They twist things. I don’t want to be part of that narrative,” he commented.
