Liav Turgeman’s Journey as St. Peter in Scorsese’s The Saints
For actor Liav Turgeman, the opportunity to portray St. Peter in Martin Scorsese’s *The Saints* marks not just a significant career achievement but also a dream fulfillment and a substantial artistic challenge.
“Auditioning for a project by one of my favorite directors, Martin Scorsese, was incredible,” Turgeman shared during an interview on *Fox & Friends Weekend*. “I was able to dive into the story of this monumental figure, which presented an amazing opportunity to bring a more human perspective to him.” He reflected on the grandeur of St. Peter’s narrative, noting it can sometimes feel distant from our daily lives.
Depicting Saint Peter’s Transformation
Turgeman’s portrayal of St. Peter debuted in the second episode of the show’s second season, which was released on Sunday. Prior to stepping into the role, Turgeman admitted he didn’t know much about the fisherman who became one of Jesus’s closest disciples. “I think Jesus saw a blend of strength and humility in him, alongside a genuine sensitivity,” he told Fox News’ Charlie Hart.
He continued, discussing Peter’s resilience, stating, “Doubting oneself requires a certain intelligence and grounding. Peter exudes strength as a working-class fisherman who provides for himself daily, yet he carries a deep sense of humility and intelligence that I believe Jesus recognized in him as qualities of a potential leader.”
On another show, *The Big Weekend Show*, Turgeman emphasized that Peter’s struggles with faith offer valuable lessons. “I mean, it’s such an epic narrative, yet it often feels out of touch with human experiences. But Peter’s journey resonates because I think everyone faces moments of doubt in themselves. There’s so much to learn from his story,” he explained.
Scorsese’s Long-Awaited Exploration
Scorsese described *Saints* as a long-in-the-making series, expressing his hope to investigate certain aspects of Christianity more deeply. The latest episode on St. Peter is part of a broader collection featuring other key Christian saints, including St. Patrick and St. Thomas Becket.
Fox Nation subscribers can now enjoy this latest season, which includes the second episode spotlighting St. Peter.
