Police officer shoots and kills man after he attacks their police dog.

A tragic incident unfolded in California when a police K-9 was shot fatally during a routine traffic stop, and later, the officer was killed after a lengthy standoff.

The shooter, whose identity remains unknown, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped late Saturday night on Interstate 5 in Burbank due to illegally tinted windows, as reported by a local news outlet.

While the driver complied with the officers, the passenger fled down an embankment, leading to an extensive manhunt that involved a helicopter.

Officer Spike, the police K-9, located the suspect hiding in the bushes. Unfortunately, the suspect opened fire multiple times, hitting Spike before fleeing the scene on foot, according to police statements.

Despite being rushed to a veterinary hospital, Spike succumbed to its injuries.

Following a standoff that lasted three and a half hours, negotiators communicated with the suspect in both Spanish and English, eventually cornering him. Police reported that the individual was shot and killed after he fired at officers from two police vehicles.

Spike was equipped with a bulletproof vest, though Lt. Derek Green remarked that such vests “don’t always save you.”

“Without a doubt, K9 Spike fulfilled his promise. He made the ultimate sacrifice for his family,” the police department shared, honoring the 4-year-old Belgian Malinois.

“Your mission is accomplished, hero. Rest in peace and enjoy all the rewards your brave heart deserves.”

Green acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that while these are police dogs, they are also integral members of the law enforcement community. “They’re trained to engage suspects in dangerous situations,” he added.

The man who killed Spike was subsequently shot dead in a confrontation with the police.

Spike had served with the department for nearly two years and was well-loved at community events.

“Thank you for bringing countless smiles to the Burbank Police Department family,” the department expressed in their tribute.
