FBI Prevents Major Terror Attack Linked to ISIS
The FBI successfully disrupted a significant terrorist plot in October, potentially saving countless American lives, and unveiled an extensive global terrorist network through strategic investigative efforts. These efforts led to what officials described as “some of the most impactful arrests” in recent counterterrorism history.
Interviews conducted with FBI Director Kash Patel, Deputy Director Dan Bongino, and other senior law enforcement officials provided exclusive insights into the case.
Threat Discovered Ahead of Halloween
A potential terrorist attack had been planned in Michigan just before Halloween and was linked to ISIS, according to the FBI. Multiple suspects were arrested, reinforcing the gravity of the threat.
“The arrests in Detroit, Newark, and Seattle reflect one of the most serious conspiracies faced by the FBI lately,” an agent stated. “These eight arrests, along with others worldwide, have represented some of the most significant actions in counterterrorism recently.”
The individuals charged are Muhammad Ali and Majed Mahmoud, both from Dearborn, Michigan. They face serious allegations related to firearms and supporting terrorism.
Overall, five individuals—including a minor—were allegedly involved in this plot.
Wider Network and Arrests
Patel explained that the FBI acted swiftly to apprehend the main perpetrators while continuously overseeing individuals in New Jersey and Seattle. He emphasized the need for a coordinated strategy to dismantle the broader network, countering critics who questioned the FBI’s timing in making the arrests.
“If we had waited until an attack occurred, it would have been too late,” Patel remarked, addressing criticisms about the FBI’s process and the details surrounding the threat’s immediacy.
According to Patel, their operations had uncovered links to conspiracies beyond U.S. borders, and several arrests had been made overseas tied to the same network. However, details were limited due to ongoing legal proceedings.
Evidence and Motivations
The FBI seized several firearms and ammunition during searches related to Ali and Mahmoud. Surveillance videos showed them and other alleged co-conspirators practicing at a shooting range, allegedly preparing for the attack.
According to the FBI’s filings, these suspects were inspired by high-profile attacks like the Pulse shooting and the Paris terror attacks in 2015, which resulted in numerous casualties.
The suspects are also reported to have sought Islamic approval for their actions from a local radical figure, discussing plans that included significant dates in extremist ideology.
Ultimately, Bongino noted, “People would have died. A lot of people. That’s true. A lot of people would have died. And their work stopped it.”
