Renowned reggae artist and actor Jimmy Cliff has passed away at the age of 81.

Cliff is often recognized for his pivotal role in evolving reggae from a local genre into an international phenomenon. He’s perhaps best remembered for his hits like “You Can Get It If You Really Want” and “I Can See Clearly Now.” His contributions left an indelible mark on generations of musicians who credit him with introducing Jamaican music to a global audience. Beyond just his musical talents, his impact on culture, storytelling, and innovative spirit will be celebrated for years to come.

His family shared the news of his passing through a heartfelt post on Instagram on Monday.

“It is with deep sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, passed away due to a stroke and subsequent pneumonia,” his wife, Latifah, said in a statement.

In her message, Latifah expressed gratitude for the support from friends, family, and even fans, saying. “He truly appreciates the love of each and every one of his fans.” She noted the immense strength they provided throughout his career. She also thanked the medical staff for their care during a difficult time.

Latifah directly addressed Jimmy in her closing words, saying, “Jimmy, my love, rest in peace. I will follow your wishes.” She requested privacy for the family and promised more information would come later, finishing with a heartfelt sentiment: “See you again, meet the legend.”

Cliff’s upbeat music, like “Wonderful World, Beautiful People,” resonated widely, drawing fans globally. Additionally, he starred in the influential 1972 film “The Harder They Come,” which played a significant role in the development of Jamaican cinema.

Throughout his illustrious career, Cliff earned accolades, including the Jamaican Order of Merit, a recognition shared by only a few, including Bob Marley. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness paid tribute to him, calling him “a true cultural giant whose music communicated the heart of our country to the world.” He reflected on how Cliff’s music uplifted spirits during tough times and inspired many, shaping the way Jamaican culture is viewed on a global scale.

Final arrangements will be communicated to the family at a later time.
