Court-martial may be considered for Sen. Mark Kelly after Trump labels him a 'traitor' over 'seditious' video

Investigation Launched into Sen. Mark Kelly

The Army announced on Monday that it is investigating Arizona Senator Mark Kelly, a Democrat, after his remarks suggested military personnel should not comply with unlawful presidential directives.

Kelly, a retired Navy captain, appeared in a video alongside other Democrats urging military members to defy illegal orders from the President, which drew immediate condemnation from President Trump on social media. He criticized their statements, labeling them as a serious form of incitement.

Trump stated, “The traitors who directed the military to disobey my orders should be in jail now, not roaming fake news networks trying to explain why they said it was okay.” He further called for severe consequences for these actions, even suggesting death penalties, although the White House later retracted that particular comment.

In response to the allegations, the Pentagon confirmed that an investigation was underway regarding the actions of Kelly. In a statement, they noted, “The Department of the Army has received allegations of serious misconduct against U.S. Navy Capt. Mark Kelly (retired).” They indicated that the review could lead to court-martial or other administrative actions as outlined by military law.

The statement included a reminder that service members must obey lawful orders, with the presumption being that such orders are lawful unless proven otherwise. This context highlights the complexities of military obedience and personal beliefs.

Additionally, Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin, another participant in the video, reported that police were called to her home due to a bomb threat, underscoring the tension surrounding these discussions.

In a social media reply to the Pentagon’s announcement, Kelly expressed that any intimidation efforts would not deter him from his responsibilities in Congress. He emphasized his commitment, stating, “I have given too much to this country to be silenced by bullies who care more about their own power than protecting the Constitution.”

The matter is being approached with the intention to ensure fairness and due process, and the Pentagon has indicated that further public commentary will be limited to maintain the integrity of the investigation.
