Nassau County Executive Takes Security Measures Following Mayor-Elect’s Win

Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican from nearby New York City, has announced plans to enhance security along the city’s border after the election of Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani. Blakeman, who recently won re-election to serve a second term in the mostly Democratic county, emphasized in an interview that he aims to bolster law and order in the face of Mamdani’s win.

“We are doing everything necessary to keep Nassau County safe,” Blakeman stated, outlining measures that include deploying license plate readers, facial recognition software, and video surveillance along the New York City border.

Additionally, he mentioned that new officers would be hired, supplementing the existing police force and the 100 cadets training at the Nassau County Police Academy.

Blakeman believes the job police are doing is commendable and reiterated his commitment to providing them with the necessary resources, training, and personnel to ensure community safety. While he expressed confidence in law enforcement, he also critiqued Mamdani’s rhetoric, suggesting that the mayor-elect seemed to defend criminals rather than victims.

In a recent election, Blakeman won by almost 12 points, achieving victory despite the county having a higher number of registered Democrats. He attributed his success to a focus on public safety and affordability, themes which he thinks resonate broadly across demographics. He also voiced concerns about New York state’s sanctuary policies and discussed cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“I think people are craving a safe place,” he explained. Blakeman has not shied away from supporting former President Trump, believing that this has garnered him respect, even among those who might disagree with him. He emphasized that his administration is committed to keeping taxes low and appealing to a wide spectrum of voters.

Interestingly, his law-and-order messaging sharply contrasts with Mamdani’s previous statements labeling police as threats to public safety. Although Mamdani later distanced himself from those comments, his suggestions to replace certain law enforcement roles with mental health professionals have raised concerns regarding potential crime increases in New York City.

As New York shifts leftward, Blakeman positions himself as a counterweight to Mamdani’s policies, which he believes could undermine what New York has built economically. He welcomed those leaving the city for safety and affordability to consider Nassau County.
