Surge in Violence Against ICE Officers
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed on Monday that there has been a staggering increase—over 1,150%—in assaults against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers since Biden took office, compared to the previous year.
Between January 21 and November 21, DHS reported 238 assaults on ICE personnel. This marks a notable rise from just 19 incidents during the same timeframe in 2024.
Officials indicated that the rise is likely connected to public statements from sanctuary city leaders and expressed concern that such rhetoric might provoke even more violence.
“Sanctuary politicians should reconsider their language before we see a law enforcement officer lose their life,” said Assistant Secretary of State Tricia McLaughlin. “They ought to be thankful for the courageous officers who risk their lives daily to apprehend dangerous criminals in their neighborhoods.”
McLaughlin also mentioned that the uptick in violence includes a range of alarming incidents—officers facing everything from verbal abuse to physical attacks involving vehicles and even explosives.
For instance, one officer was struck in the face with a metal object, requiring 13 stitches. Another suffered a head injury and a concussion during an arrest.
“Our officers have had petrol bombs and rocks hurled at them, shot at, and assaulted,” McLaughlin continued. “This is unacceptable.”
In September, a Guatemalan national, Henry Isor Garcia, allegedly tried to run over an ICE officer during an attempted arrest in Florida. Earlier this summer, former U.S. Marine Corps reservist Benjamin Hanil Song reportedly took part in a coordinated attack on federal agents, resulting in multiple shootings.
Moreover, in June, Eric Anthony Rodriguez attempted to hit police officers with a Molotov cocktail at a hotel where several ICE agents were staying. Rodriguez has a lengthy criminal history.
The DHS emphasized that these events showcase how ICE officers are targeted not just for their enforcement actions but also for the badges they wear. They concluded by stating that any attack on law enforcement is essentially an attack on the principles of law itself.
