UAB Football Player Charged After Stabbing Incident
A football player from the University of Alabama at Birmingham has been charged with attempted murder following a stabbing incident involving two of his teammates. This occurred inside the team facility shortly before Saturday’s Senior Day loss.
Daniel Israel Mincey, aged 20, allegedly used a knife to stab teammates Jasiah Peterson and Joshua Underwood in the football operations building on campus just after 10 a.m., as reported by court records.
Mincey faces charges of attempted murder for his attack on Peterson and aggravated assault concerning Underwood. He was taken into custody several hours later and is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail in Birmingham on a $90,000 bail.
No motive for the stabbing has been revealed by authorities. Mincey, a redshirt freshman originally from Florida State, had participated in one game at Kentucky in 2024 before transferring to UAB for the 2025 season. Since the incident, his name has been removed from the school’s online directory.
As for Peterson and Underwood, both were discharged from the hospital by Monday, according to interim head coach Alex Mortensen, who requested privacy for the players. The specific condition of the injured players hasn’t been disclosed.
Mortensen shared that he had a conversation with Peterson and Underwood after their release and emphasized the importance of their well-being, stating, “They appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers. The most important thing to us is the health of our student-athletes, and we will ensure they have access to counseling services this week.”
During Saturday’s game against South Florida at Protective Stadium, UAB suffered a 48-18 loss. Athletic Director Mark Ingram characterized the day as extremely sad for UAB football, explaining that they contemplated not playing at all after the stabbing but chose to proceed once they confirmed that the injured players were stable.
Before the game, seniors were honored, although some opted out of playing following the incident. UAB will face Tulsa at Oklahoma State next, wrapping up the season with a 3-8 record.
