Nigeria Kidnappings: Insights from a Nun

A nun has shared alarming details about the kidnapping of numerous children from Catholic schools in Nigeria, revealing that many of the victims are as young as five. According to Mary Barron, Superior General of the Sisters of Our Lady of the Apostles, about 50 children managed to escape over the weekend.

Speaking on Friday, Barron described the plight of the 303 children taken from St. Mary’s School in the Papiri community. She noted that many of these children are quite young. “Education is scarce in this region,” she explained. “Parents often send their kids from daycare to boarding schools, so it’s common to find very young children. Most of the missing kids are in primary school.”

On Sunday, school officials announced that from Friday to Saturday, 50 students aged between 10 and 18 managed to escape individually. Sadly, 253 students and 12 teachers are still in captivity.

Barron explained that the children escaped by jumping over a wall and running into the bushes. “They said they couldn’t walk back to school, so they just kept walking until they recognized something,” she added.

No group has taken responsibility for this heart-wrenching attack, according to reports. Authorities have mentioned that tactical units and local hunters are currently involved in efforts to rescue the abducted individuals.

The fate of the remaining students and teachers is still uncertain. Barron expressed her hope, stating, “If we can rally the right resources and enough people, I truly believe we can find them.” She remains optimistic about the potential for a successful rescue.

This troubling series of kidnappings targeted Christians and their communities in Nigeria. In light of the violence, the U.S. administration previously designated Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” though the Nigerian government rejects this characterization.
