Tribute to K9 Spike After Fatal Shooting Incident in Burbank
In Burbank, California, the police department shared a poignant video on social media, honoring a K9 named Spike who lost his life in a recent shooting incident. Spike, a four-year-old dog, was part of the police force and was helping to find a passenger during a routine traffic stop on Buena Vista Street when, tragically, the suspect began firing, hitting Spike.
After the incident, officers returned fire and killed the suspect before rushing Spike to a veterinarian. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries there. The police department expressed their deep sorrow on Facebook, announcing that Spike had bravely given his life in service. “K9 Spike was both intelligent and loyal, known for his calmness off-duty and tenacity while working,” they said. They also urged the community to keep Spike’s handler, Mr. Ofuku Salas, and the rest of the department in their thoughts during this difficult time.
In a heartfelt tribute, the department remarked that “K9 Spike risked his life and made the ultimate sacrifice for his family.” They reflected on the joy he brought to the Burbank PD, stating that he would now enjoy “endless rewards” in the afterlife.
Meanwhile, reports from NBC Los Angeles indicated that had the suspect survived, he would have faced charges for murder against a police officer. By 2025, it’s estimated that at least 22 K9 officers will have died while serving.
