Tragic Loss of Florida Sailor in Hawaii
A sailor from Florida, stationed in Hawaii, has tragically died after bravely rescuing two children in Waiapua’a Bay.
Marksman 1st Class Jeffrey Diaz, 47, passed away on Saturday, as confirmed by a news release from the Kauai Police Department.
According to the statement, Diaz, who served at the Pacific Missile Range facility in Barking Sands, jumped into the choppy waters to save the children who were struggling. Fortunately, the kids made it back to shore safely, but Diaz encountered difficulties.
Responders from the Marine Safety Authority and Barking Sands Fire and Emergency Services managed to retrieve Diaz from the water and attempted life-saving measures. He was subsequently transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our sailor and friend, MA1 Jeffrey Diaz, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and fellow sailors,” stated Capt. Robert Prince, commander of the Pacific Missile Launch Complex.
He also expressed gratitude to the first responders and emphasized that they remain dedicated to supporting Diaz’s family and all those impacted during this challenging time.
An autopsy is currently underway to determine the official cause of death, though authorities indicated that no foul play is suspected.
