Detroit Lions Welcomes Back Frank Ragnow
The Detroit Lions received some significant offensive support on Wednesday.
According to various reports, four-time Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow is coming out of retirement to rejoin the team. The Lions appeared to confirm this by sharing a photo of Ragnow running out of the tunnel on social media.
Ragnow, who is 29, had retired unexpectedly in June. He expressed on social media that, despite trying to convince himself he was ready to play again, he needed to prioritize his health. Over his seven-year career, which began when he was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, Ragnow spent all his time with the Lions.
In his Instagram post announcing his retirement, Ragnow mentioned how difficult that decision was. He stated, “I have given everything I have to this team and thought I could contribute more, but the reality is that is not the case. I have to listen to my body. This was one of the hardest decisions of my life.” He went on to appreciate the Lions organization for their support during that challenging time, expressing gratitude towards the team and fans.
After the 2021 season, Ragnow signed a four-year, $54 million contract with the Lions, which made him the highest-paid center in the league at that time. He made the Pro Bowl in the seasons following that contract and has consistently proven to be one of the best centers, even while dealing with injuries at times. His contract runs through the 2026 season, meaning he’ll be under contract when he returns to Detroit.
Per ESPN guidelines, if a player is on the reserve retirement list, he needs to return before the Week 13 game to participate in that season. Wednesday marked Ragnow’s last opportunity to return in time, especially with the Lions scheduled to play against the Green Bay Packers on Thanksgiving.
Bringing Ragnow back is a significant boost for the 7-4 Lions, currently positioned third in the NFC North. However, it remains uncertain when he will take to the field in the 2025 season.
The Lions are set to face the Packers tomorrow at 1 PM ET.
