Brian Kelly Terminated from LSU Football Position
Brian Kelly, the former head coach for the LSU football team, received a termination letter from the university the day before Thanksgiving.
According to Ross Dellenger from Yahoo Sports, the letter indicates that Kelly is being dismissed “without cause” and will receive the full $54 million buyout over a span of six years.
However, to secure the entire payout, Kelly must seek new employment.
This letter also outlines Kelly’s obligation to actively pursue job opportunities. It mentions he should make “reasonable and sustained efforts in good faith” to find work and maintain documentation of his job search, which would include interviews and job offers.
The termination notice followed Kelly’s claims that his situation at LSU had made it “impossible” for him to get a new coaching role. Conversely, the university countered that he hadn’t been “officially terminated” and suggested that his legal representative might be impacting his chances for new positions.
In response to LSU’s stance, the letter argued that their claims that Kelly wasn’t fired or that there was just cause for his dismissal are entirely unfounded. It went on to state that LSU’s actions, particularly their failure to acknowledge that Kelly was let go without cause, have severely hindered his job prospects.
They added that LSU’s decisions are particularly damaging given the critical recruiting period for college football.
Kelly was dismissed on October 26 after the team’s loss to Texas A&M. Former LSU athletic director Scott Woodward mentioned that the firing was related to performance issues.
The buyout, which amounts to $54 million, ranks among the most substantial in college football history and has drawn criticism from Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry for its exorbitant cost.
