Keith Hernandez on WFAN This Thanksgiving

Keith Hernandez will be joining Richard Near on the radio this Thanksgiving morning. Near is stepping in to host WFAN during the holiday season.

The beloved Mets player, known for his role in the 1986 World Series victory, shared on social media that he’ll co-host a two-hour segment on the all-sports talk station.

Near will be filling in for Boomer Esiason and Greg Gianotti.

Hernandez wrote, “Richard Near will be back on WFAN on Thanksgiving morning from 6 am to 10 am. I will be joining him as co-host from 8 am to 10 am. Join us!”

Interestingly, Hernandez and Near are neighbors in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Apparently, Near even helped Hernandez settle into his home earlier this year, which is kinda nice, I think.

This appearance happens while Hernandez is awaiting the terms of a new contract with SNY, where he’s covered Mets games for the last two decades.

The broadcast team, featuring Gary Cohen, Ron Darling, and Hernandez, has gained quite a reputation, becoming a favorite among Mets fans over the years.

In a podcast with The Post, Hernandez mentioned that he hasn’t started negotiations with any regional sports networks yet. It’s a little surprising, really, given how popular he is.

Hernandez, now 72, has expressed a desire to continue working, mentioning, “I’m not ready to retire. If I do three more years, I’ll be 75 on a three-year contract.” That’s quite a commitment, I suppose.

Darling recently shared his belief that Hernandez will finalize a new deal soon, indicating confidence in Hernandez’s return to the booth. There seems to be a lot of goodwill surrounding these discussions.

Darling also noted, “There’s no way we could even do what we do without Keith. When Gary Cohen and I do our own broadcasts, we tend to be a little nerdy, because, well, that’s just us. And Keith definitely brightens things up.”
