Shedeur Sanders’ NFL Journey Receives Support from Trump
Shedeur Sanders has experienced a tumultuous beginning to his NFL career, but he found unwavering support from one individual throughout it all.
After Sanders was unexpectedly passed over during the NFL Draft, President Donald Trump openly criticized team owners who he deemed “stupid” for not selecting him. Following his first victory on the field last Sunday, Trump expressed his approval, remarking, “I told you so.”
The 23-year-old quarterback seems to appreciate Trump’s backing.
“He was definitely a supporter every step of the way, and I really value him taking the time to speak out,” Sanders mentioned to reporters recently.
In his debut as a starter, Sanders completed 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards and threw one touchdown in a 24-10 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, highlighted by a remarkable 66-yard touchdown pass. The connection with Isaiah Bond for an early score was also impressive.
“Shedeur Sanders did a fantastic job winning his first game to kick off his professional career. Great genes, I told you so!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Highly regarded as one of the top quarterbacks available, Sanders was drafted by the Cleveland Browns as a fifth-round pick. Back in April, many, including Trump, were puzzled by his drop in the draft.
In a previous post, Trump had remarked, “What’s with the NFL owners? Are they not paying attention? Deion Sanders was a remarkable player and is a smart coach, and Shedeur has inherited those phenomenal genes. He’s destined for greatness.”
Sanders expressed gratitude for Trump’s ongoing support back in May.
Initially starting the season as a third-string quarterback behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel, the Browns eventually traded Flacco. After Gabriel suffered a concussion, Sanders found himself getting the chance to step up, and surprisingly, even after Gabriel was cleared from concussion protocol, the team chose to stick with Sanders.
“Everyone has a unique starting point. I didn’t quite make the summer squad because I wasn’t in the best position to perform,” Sanders reflected. “Life isn’t always easy, but you have to execute regardless. No one cares how much prep time you had. A lot of people might want to see me fail, but that’s not coming to pass,” he insisted.
The Browns are set to face the San Francisco 49ers next week.
