Woman Meets Biological Father for the First Time Through DNA Match
Grab a tissue—it’s a touching moment when a woman meets her biological father for the first time, all thanks to a DNA match. For Sarah Pilkington, 35, that life-altering moment came from a simple notification on her phone: “DNA results ready.”
For most of her life, Sarah yearned for the father she never knew. She often thought about the ways he might have influenced her—like teaching her to ride a bike, planting tomatoes, solving math problems, or dancing with her at her wedding. The absence of this figure left a quiet void, something she found hard to articulate.
A Life Without Knowing Her Father
Her story began when her mother became pregnant at 20, but her father was never identified. Life continued, with her mother raising Sarah and later her stepfather, though she never really connected with him. While she treasured her relationship with her mother, there was always a sense of incompleteness—“a big part of my identity was gone,” she reflects.
Yet, in what felt like an incomplete storyline, a new chapter was waiting to unfold.
In August 2025, after feeling like a potential burden for years, Sarah made a brave choice. “I was always afraid of rejection,” she admits. But she felt she finally had the encouragement to seek him out, ready to handle whatever might happen.
Taking the Step to Order a DNA Test
Sitting in the warmth of a sunny day, Sarah decided to take an ancestry test.
Just three weeks later, everything switched gears.
“I matched with a close relative—my aunt,” she shares. With her sister’s help, they found a photo of a man with striking brown eyes, someone Sarah intuitively recognized. “And… I just found out,” she recalls.
Connecting with Her Biological Father
Though she hadn’t used Facebook in years, she quickly reactivated her account and reached out to her aunt, who responded enthusiastically. Days later, while out of state for a wedding, she answered a call and heard the voice she’d longed to know: her father’s, Greg Mickles, who is 55.
“After we connected, we spoke almost daily,” she says. “It felt natural.”
In October, Greg and his wife traveled from California to meet Sarah in Washington.
Feeling Complete in the Moment
As she opened the door to greet him, Sarah was flooded with emotions. “I had a father,” she thought. There were tears on both sides as they shared that moment. “He’s a really sweet guy,” she remarked.
The connection felt profound, like pieces of a long-lost puzzle coming together.
“My father is like me. Or maybe I’m like him. We have kind hearts, and he turned out to be better than I expected,” she said.
Looking Ahead with Hope
What amazed Sarah wasn’t just finding him, but the ease with which everything fell into place, as though a door had been waiting to open. “I’d heard stories of difficult searches,” she reflected. “I really didn’t think it would happen so quickly or easily. I guess my fears held me back.”
Now, with a sense of calm, she’s looking forward to holiday gatherings, long conversations, and reclaiming the years she felt were lost. “I can’t quite express the level of peace I feel,” she states.
A Message for Those Hesitant to Search
For anyone daunted by the idea of finding their roots, Sarah has some words of encouragement: “My family, friends, and partner have given me the courage for this step. Without their support, it might’ve taken much longer.”
Sometimes, life brings miracles in the most unexpected ways, whether it’s through a test kit, a Facebook message, or a phone call, helping to close the gap where something was once missing.
Perhaps, sometimes, the door you hesitated to knock on swings wide open, revealing the connections you’ve long desired, standing right there with tears of joy, ready to embrace you.
