Giants Continue to Use Eric Gray Despite Fumble Concerns
Eric Gray’s struggles with ball security are clear. Yet, the Giants seem to be making a calculated choice, sticking with the former fifth-round draft pick as their kickoff returner, even after he experienced six fumbles over 81 career plays from both scrimmage and special teams.
Gray made his comeback from a knee injury but had a quiet showing on Sunday during his season debut, managing just a 15-yard return that began at the 18-yard line.
So, why keep him in that role? After all, Gray lost his spot as a rookie punt returner earlier this season.
“He has considerable experience in that position,” noted special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial. “As a running back, he’s accustomed to handling the ball. He gets the vision and how to capitalize on blocks.”
He added, “He came to me and expressed his regret after making that mistake. I reassured him, saying, ‘No need to apologize; we just need to correct it.’ This involves his determination and seriousness. Recently, he was on the JUGS machine catching plenty of balls, committing to improve his ball security.”
On the injury front, cornerback Deonte Banks (hip) and safety Tyler Nubin (neck) were elevated to full participants in Friday’s practice.
Meanwhile, linebacker Demetrius Flanigan-Fowles (neck/knee), outside linebacker Kayvon Thibodeau (shoulder), and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence (elbow) were still absent.
As for Lawrence’s status, is he ready to play without missing any games?
Interim head coach Mike Kafka commented, “He’s feeling good. He’s made it through rehab, and there’s a clear desire to get back on the field.”
Looking ahead, interim offensive coordinator Tim Kelly is familiar with the defensive schemes of the Patriots, whom the Giants will face on Monday.
Having worked as the Texans’ tight ends coach while Mike Vrabel was the defensive coordinator in 2017, Kelly has maintained that connection. Their collaboration during Texans-Titans matchups in 2019 and Kelly’s later appointment as the Titans’ coordinator in 2022-23 add to that history.
“I’ve played alongside him and have dealt with some tough matchups,” Kelly reflected. “There’s certainly some familiarity with this strategy.”
