Ohio Sheriff Criticizes Release of Undocumented Immigrant After Crash

In a troubling incident, an Ohio sheriff has pointed fingers at law enforcement colleagues for setting free an undocumented immigrant with a lengthy criminal record. This individual, Yoen Perez Ventura, is accused of crashing into an Ohio nurse while allegedly driving under the influence.

Perez Ventura, a 27-year-old from Guatemala, faces multiple charges including aggravated vehicular assault, driving without a license, and obstruction of justice, as indicated by Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.

The nurse in question, Courtney Steinmetz, who also coaches cheerleading, was reportedly struck head-on by Perez Ventura while driving on Route 747 in Liberty Township on November 20.

Perez Ventura has a history; he was first detained at the Texas border in 2019 and later deported back to Guatemala. However, he returned to the U.S. at some point and was charged with assault in Cincinnati earlier this year, followed by an arrest for driving under the influence in Westchester. Surprisingly, he was released after both of these incidents.

His legal troubles didn’t stop there. In 2024, he faced two more arrests for drunk driving, yet again, he got away without serving any serious time.

Jones expressed outrage, saying that laws designed to address such cases seem to have failed. He mused that officials might have been hesitant to detain him, knowing that it would lead to deportation. “It’s terrifying,” he remarked. “He was already in jail for drunk driving and assault, and he still managed to slip away.”

Perez Ventura, through an interpreter, contended that he was not behind the wheel, claiming to be on probation for a different crime.

After the collision, Sheriff Jones visited Steinmetz, discovering she was in “severe pain,” with injuries including a broken wrist and ankle, alongside spinal problems. “She’s only 27, pursuing her dream as an RN, now confined to a hospital bed,” he noted. He added that she would likely struggle with these injuries for the rest of her life.

A GoFundMe page has been initiated to assist Steinmetz with medical bills, lost wages, and other related costs since she lacks insurance.

Despite her own setback, Steinmetz expressed concern for Perez Ventura, stating she hoped he would recover, though it’s unclear how genuine that sentiment was considering the circumstances.

Jones, not one to pull punches, criticized Perez Ventura’s attitude, pointing out the smirk in his mug shot. “He won’t be deported again… he will face consequences here,” he insisted, emphasizing a firm approach moving forward, including pursuing further charges related to the crash and investigating those who provided him alcohol and transportation.

“I have no sympathy,” Jones concluded, reflecting on how if the system had worked correctly, this tragedy could have been avoided entirely. He also mentioned that nearly six undocumented immigrants in Butler County were recently arrested for various serious offenses, highlighting the ongoing issues surrounding immigration and crime in the area.
