Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the former chair of the Democratic National Committee from Florida, indicated on Friday that President Donald Trump bears some responsibility for the deaths of National Guard members.
Following an ambush-style attack that resulted in the death of Guard member Sarah Beckstrom and injury to Sergeant Andrew Wolfe, some commentators suggested that this incident was a direct consequence of Trump’s decision to deploy the National Guard across American cities.
While discussions around the shooting were unfolding, CNN host Sarah Sydner interviewed Schultz about the tragic events. She pondered, “Would an individual have traveled across the country to target law enforcement in Washington, D.C.? Probably not. So, why didn’t the president first consider whether deploying troops in the capital or other cities was the right move?”
Schultz underscored the importance of local law enforcement capabilities, stating, “We should be focusing on law enforcement, not the military, especially when there’s a lack of coordination with city leaders.”
In response to rising crime rates in major cities, President Trump had ordered a more robust federal presence.
At a press conference earlier this year, even D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, despite initial reluctance, acknowledged that federal tax hikes had significantly reduced carjackings in the area.
In light of the shooting by an Afghan national this past Wednesday, Trump has called for a halt to mass immigration from certain regions and proposed a “reverse migration” initiative.
Sydner noted that just days prior to the incident, news emerged about the Trump administration planning to reexamine refugees who arrived during Biden’s presidency.

Wasserman Schultz remarked, “Any administration needs to tread carefully regarding sweeping statements. If there were oversight issues with this individual, they would have had to bypass several checkpoints, and yet they were deemed trustworthy enough to support our troops during the Afghanistan war.”
She went on to argue that the onus is on Trump for placing the National Guard in vulnerable situations, stating, “The president seems to be looking outward instead of reflecting on his own policies. We need to avoid deploying military forces into urban areas for law enforcement duties. While rigorous vetting is crucial, Trump’s reaction to this incident doesn’t reflect a genuine recognition of responsibility. It’s quite troubling.”
The White House responded sharply, asserting, “This individual would not be in our country if not for what we see as Biden’s risky policies that have permitted numerous unvetted criminals entry. We are doing everything we can to protect the American populace from these threats and rectify what the Biden administration has created. Instead of shielding terrorists, Democrats should partner with us for the safety of American citizens,” commented Press Secretary Abigail Jackson.
