Simon Cowell Reflects on the Past and Mentions a Preference for Life Before the Internet

For Simon Cowell, nostalgia for the days gone by is quite strong. He recently expressed that if given the choice between eliminating the internet and keeping it, he would not think twice. During an interview with a prominent publication, he was posed a hypothetical question—whether he would press a red button to halt the internet or a green one to continue its existence. Cowell’s immediate response was, “Stop it.”

Cowell elaborated on this sentiment, reminiscing about a time when fewer options were available. “I was oddly contemplating this recently,” he shared. “I love the simplicity of when we didn’t have so many choices.” He pointed to the experience of going to the movies—like watching ‘Jaws’ or ‘Star Wars.’ “Those were big events,” he noted, emphasizing that the excitement surrounding their releases made the experience enjoyable. “Honestly, I believe people were happier back then.”

Interestingly, Cowell shared that he tends to live in a sort of bubble. “To put it frankly, I don’t really engage with the world outside my immediate surroundings,” he admitted. “I don’t own a phone, and I avoid online news entirely.” He doesn’t keep up with social media and has no awareness of any accounts attributed to him. “Honestly, I don’t think about it, and that’s partly why I feel content. If you asked me if I’m softer now, I suppose that’s accurate. I’ve deliberately distanced myself from the chaos.”

Reflecting on his earlier persona—especially during his time on “American Idol”—he acknowledged having softened over the years. “I think I was a bit harsh back then,” he confessed. “I know I crossed lines and might have been too brutal with my honesty. I regret that now.” In a candid moment, he admitted that certain audition days were particularly trying for him, describing them as long and tedious. “What can I say? I’m sorry about how I came across,” he remarked, hinting at his recognition of past missteps.
