Rep. Troy Nehls Will Not Seek Re-Election; Twin Brother to Run

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-Texas) announced on Saturday that he has decided not to run for re-election in 2026, opting instead to devote more time to his family. He also revealed that his twin brother plans to run for the position after him.

Nehls reached this decision following discussions with his family over Thanksgiving. He has represented his district in the U.S. House since 2021.

“After serving over 30 years in law enforcement—being a police officer, constable, sheriff, and military veteran—while also representing this district in Congress for six years, I feel it’s time to refocus on my family and head back home following this legislative session,” he shared on X.

As an ally to former President Donald Trump, Nehls mentioned that he informed Trump about his plans before making a public announcement.

“It has been my life’s honor to serve this country, my community, and this district in Congress. Thank you all for your trust and friendship,” he added.

Nehls, 57, has been a supporter of Trump’s mass deportation proposal. Recently, the House Judiciary Committee put forward a bill designed to simplify deportations for illegal immigrants, while a similar measure has been proposed in the Senate by Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.).

In addition, Nehls co-sponsored a bill to honor Trump by placing him on the $100 bill, and he has called for renaming Dulles International Airport after Trump.

Having served in the U.S. Army Reserve and completed combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, Nehls also spent a substantial amount of time in law enforcement.

His retirement adds to a growing trend among Republicans stepping away from their positions, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), who recently announced her resignation citing disagreements with Trump.

After Nehls shared his retirement news, his twin brother, Trevor Nehls, expressed his intention to run for the congressional seat. “I’m honored to announce my candidacy for the 22nd Congressional District. Our district needs a representative who will continue Troy’s legacy and stand with Trump to uphold conservative values, secure our borders, and oppose the damaging policies executed by Democrats,” he shared on Facebook.
