Inter Miami Defeats NYCFC in Eastern Conference Finals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Early in the first half, a confrontation between New York City FC and Inter Miami threw the visiting team off balance. Shortly after the scuffle, Messi’s team took advantage and quickly established a 2-0 lead.

While this incident wasn’t the direct cause of NYCFC’s exit in the Eastern Conference Finals, a bit of mental gamesmanship certainly contributed to the tense atmosphere during the first half of their eventual 5-1 defeat.

The altercation, which lasted several minutes, saw Messi and fellow Argentine Maxi Morales butt heads. At one point, Messi had to be restrained, and Thiago Martins was clearly grappling with an Inter Miami player while Nicolás Fernández Mercau was also held down.

Martins commented on the incident, saying, “It’s normal. Something will happen in the game.” He added, “As you can see, this is typical. Of course, we support our friends and teammates, but when they restart the game, we aren’t always ready.” This resulted in Inter Miami scoring again.

According to the NYCFC captain, Inter Miami frequently “tries to get under our skin” during matches to gain an upper hand.

Not long after the match resumed, Tadeo Allende netted his second goal of three for the night.

Following the goal, Morales was seen exchanging words with Rodrigo de Paul while heading back to midfield.

In the aftermath, NYCFC head coach Pascal Jansen expressed his frustrations, pointing out, “We often face challenges and demonstrate fighting spirit, but we didn’t get the referee’s support when the second goal came in.” He noted that the game was restarted despite the ongoing scuffle. “It took about five minutes for everything to settle down. It might seem minor, but in that moment, it doesn’t help.”

Although NYCFC managed to score once before halftime, Inter Miami added three more goals to their tally before the final whistle.

Throughout the Eastern Conference finals, referee John Freamon issued a total of eight yellow cards.
