Ways to help Gen Z men re-enter the workforce and dating scene

Generation Z: The New “Lost Generation”

Generation Z, typically defined as those aged around 13 to 28, appears to be echoing the traits of the historical “Lost Generation.”

Often called “zoomers,” this group has grown up surrounded by smartphones, social media, and immense societal change.

Young men, particularly in their teens and twenties, are delaying traditional milestones such as marriage, home ownership, and parenthood, and many are not working full-time.

There’s a stereotype that zoomers are simply lazy, spending too much time on video games and relying too heavily on their parents. However, this generalization overlooks the complexities of their situation.

Interestingly, dating seems to be less common among them, possibly due to a fear of maturity and the responsibilities that come with adulthood.

But there’s another perspective to consider. Throughout their schooling, young men, especially white men, have often faced criticism for perceived “toxic masculinity,” leading to accusations of sexism and racism.

In many elite colleges, white men make up a small percentage of the student body—around 9-10%—drawing little attention from admissions officials. Instead, they often feel categorized negatively by race and gender.

There’s a feeling among Gen Z males that they are being unfairly blamed for the issues of previous generations, caught in a simplistic view of oppressor versus oppressed.

The established paths to adulthood—things like affordable housing and stable employment—are increasingly out of reach due to various socio-economic challenges.

Many of the vocal campus activists, focused on issues like climate change and diversity, seem disconnected from the realities of starting a family or building a career.

In recent years, the number of white men joining the military has seen a notable decline, especially during the Biden administration—despite the heavy toll faced by troops in past conflicts.

Gen Z males often seem uncomfortable discussing relationships and intimacy, perhaps influenced by a culture that promotes provocative fashions and celebrates empowered singlehood.

Dating norms appear to have transformed drastically. While casual sex is often glamorized on social media, in reality, it can feel empty and selfish, with men frequently bearing the blame for negative outcomes.

The rising costs of education have also strained this generation, with tuition soaring faster than inflation. Many universities have more administrators than teachers and focus heavily on issues surrounding race.

Zoomers are now facing hefty student loan debts, often for degrees that don’t seem to hold much value in the job market.

In the midst of all these pressures, many young men find themselves confused and lacking guidance, turning to figures like Jordan Peterson and Joe Rogan for some clarity.

Without significant societal shifts, it seems the challenges facing this generation won’t just fade away. A reduction of the divisive rhetoric surrounding issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion could foster a more inclusive atmosphere.

Moreover, with female students dominating undergraduate numbers, questions about fairness in admissions processes need addressing.

The federal government must reconsider its approach to student loans, especially considering the financial burden on young adults with degrees that don’t lead to careers.

Universities should take responsibility for their own loans and ensure students graduate in a timely manner by cutting unnecessary administrative costs.

Additionally, recognizing the value of skilled trades, whose practitioners should receive better compensation and status, might shift societal mindsets.

Finally, creating affordable housing options must be a priority, as current regulations often make it unattainable.

If we don’t find constructive ways to support Generation Z, the consequences could be troubling for everyone involved.
