Allegations of Fraud and Retaliation Against Tim Walz
More than 400 employees from the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) have accused Governor Tim Walz of not acting on widespread fraud claims and retaliating against those who blow the whistle on these issues.
The employee group, comprised of over 480 current Minnesota DHS staff, stated in a message that Walz expressed he is “100% responsible for the massive fraud in Minnesota.” They said, “We notified Tim Walz of the fraud early on, expecting cooperation to halt it, but instead faced retaliation. There was systematic intimidation towards whistleblowers—he used surveillance and attempts at discrediting the fraud reports.” They went on to say that, in addition to retaliating, Walz limited the powers of the Legislative Audit Office, which allowed the agency to overlook audit findings and recommendations.
As of now, Walz’s office has not commented on the allegations.
The accusations arise amid ongoing federal investigations into significant fraud linked to the COVID-19 pandemic. Recently, the Department of Justice has revealed new charges against an individual involved in the Feeding Our Future scheme. This operation reportedly siphoned off over $250 million from government-funded child nutrition programs, resulting in more than 50 convictions, many of which involve members of Minnesota’s Somali community.
Initially seen by many as a singular case of pandemic-related fraud, it has now raised alarms for both state and federal authorities. Reports indicate that in the last five years, numerous fraudulent schemes have emerged within the Somali community in Minnesota. Some individuals allegedly established fake companies to charge state agencies for social services that were never delivered.
Interestingly, a report from the Manhattan Institute’s City Journal suggested that some of the fraudulently obtained funds might have ended up in Somalia, possibly financing the terrorist group al-Shabaab. However, it’s worth noting that the federal fraud charges do not include any terrorism connections.
In a press conference held last week, Walz commented on the fraud, underscoring that it “erodes trust in government” and “undermines programs critical for improving quality of life.” He emphasized, “If you commit fraud—regardless of your background—you will face the consequences.”
