Mikal Bridges’ Defensive Efforts Shine in Knicks’ Victory
Mikal Bridges modestly noted that he didn’t think he defended Brandon Ingram particularly well. But his teammate, Miles McBride, chimed in from his locker to commend him, saying, “Well done.” This moment kind of captured the essence of Bridges’ performance.
Ingram has been instrumental for the Raptors, who have surprised many this season. However, during the Knicks’ 116-94 victory at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, the game was marked by more turnovers than successful shots.
Bridges was central to the action, primarily defending Ingram and limiting him to just 14 points on 4-of-11 shooting. Notably, Ingram has only been held below 14 points in two games all year.
The Knicks struggled with ball control, accumulating five turnovers, the worst in the game at a minus-22. Coach Mike Brown pointed out, “It’s tough to really ‘shut down’ guys like Ingram. It’s a team effort when it comes to protecting the basketball. Mikal was right there against Ingram and did a fantastic job.”
Ingram averaged a team-high of 21.9 points going into the game. Typically, it would be OG Anunoby tasked with guarding elite scorers, but due to a hamstring injury, Bridges has stepped into that role recently.
His results varied, but he’s been more reliable lately, racking up impressive stats with nine steals and six blocks during the Knicks’ current four-game winning streak. “I’m just trying to do whatever it takes to help my team win,” Bridges commented. “Just going into every game, making plays on the ball, and supporting my teammates.”
Bridges’ defensive skill in keeping opponents from penetrating the paint is significant for the Knicks’ overall defensive performance, setting a standard for his teammates. “Holding a team like this to just 94 points shows how strong our defense was tonight,” Brown mentioned, acknowledging the team’s physicality and ability to avoid fouling while transitioning back on defense.
