West Virginia Pays Tribute to Fallen National Guard Members

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that he spoke with the families of two National Guard members who were shot last week in Washington, D.C. He expressed his condolences to the family of 20-year-old Sarah Beckstrom, who succumbed to her injuries, and Andrew Wolf, who is currently in a critical condition. Trump conveyed his desire to honor both soldiers at the White House.

While aboard Air Force One, Trump shared that the family of the West Virginia National Guard member is deeply affected by the tragic incident that occurred just a short distance from the White House. “Andrew is fighting for his life. His parents are incredible people, very religious people,” Trump remarked, highlighting their faith and hope for his recovery.

During his remarks, Trump mentioned the possibility of visiting the White House with both families. He indicated the importance of the event, saying, “When you’re ready, come to the White House because it’s a big deal. We’re going to honor Sarah,” adding that they would do the same for Andrew, regardless of his recovery outcome.

Beckstrom served as an Army specialist and Wolf as an Air Force staff officer, both part of the West Virginia National Guard deployed in the D.C. area following a directive from Trump aimed at reducing crime there. The individual charged in the shooting is 29-year-old Rahmanullah Rakanwar, an Afghan national.

Rakanwar entered the U.S. legally in September 2021 through the Biden administration’s Operation Welcoming Allies, a program designed for Afghan evacuees. He faces charges of first-degree murder and two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, and the Justice Department has indicated intentions to pursue the death penalty.

In West Virginia, community vigils were held to honor the fallen soldiers, including one at Webster County High School, where Beckstrom had been a student. Gov. Patrick Morrisey praised Beckstrom as “Webster County’s favorite daughter,” recognizing her caring nature and dedication to helping others. “Her life was too short, but she left a mark that will last forever,” he reflected at the wake.
