Trump cautions of serious consequences if Honduras changes presidential election outcomes

Trump Intervenes in Honduran Election Tensions

President Donald Trump made headlines on Monday by inserting himself into the tight presidential race in Honduras. He expressed strong warnings towards election officials, stating that they would “pay a price in hell” if they attempted to manipulate the election results.

In a piece posted on Truth Social, Trump accused Honduras of, well, “trying to change the outcome,” though he didn’t really provide any evidence to back this claim. “If that happens, you will pay a price in hell! The people of Honduras voted overwhelmingly on November 30th,” he asserted.

This statement came just after Ana Paola Hall, the President of the National Electoral Council, shared on X that the preliminary results of the rapid reporting system had concluded, with about 57% of the votes counted.

As for the current situation, two conservative candidates are neck-and-neck, with Nasri Asfullah of the National Party barely leading Salvador Nasrallah of the Liberal Party. Democratic Socialist Libre candidate Rixie Moncada trails significantly, losing by around 20 points.

Trump emphasized the need for proper counting: “It is imperative that the committee completes its counting of votes,” he wrote. “Hundreds of thousands of Hondurans must have their votes counted. Democracy must prevail!” However, election officials indicated that although counting would continue, they didn’t provide a timeline for the next update, and it seemed some of their online systems were down.

Before the reporting freeze, Trump had also endorsed Asfullah, labeling him “the only Honduran candidate the administration will work with” in a campaign against “narco-communists.”

The close results have both leading candidates claiming superiority, even though neither has managed to declare a definitive victory. Trump’s announcement about considering a pardon for former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, currently serving a significant prison sentence in the U.S., also has stirred the pot. This shows just how much American politics can bleed into Honduras’ political scene.

As the situation unfolds, Trump’s latest remarks have added even more complexity to an already charged environment following the elections. The outcome could shape Honduras’ future, especially its relationship with the United States, and that’s a big deal. It’s hard to predict where this will lead, but one thing’s for sure: the stakes are high.
