Braden Schneider Steps Up for Injured Adam Fox
Braden Schneider is set to take the spotlight as he fills in for the injured Adam Fox on the Rangers’ leading defensive pair. During Monday’s practice, Schneider partnered with Vladislav Gavrikov, a necessary adjustment as Fox is anticipated to be sidelined for several weeks due to a left arm injury, placing him on long-term injured reserve.
“We really need to lean into our team identity and our own roles,” Schneider noted. “It’s clear we can’t replicate what Fox brings to the table.”
He continued, “Fox ranks among the top offensive defensemen in the league, and his absence is significant. However, we must focus on our own responsibilities—breaking up plays, playing solid defense, and making sure we distribute the puck effectively to our forwards.”
Schneider emphasized the importance of solidifying their defense, suggesting that if they succeed in that, the offense will naturally follow. “But, of course, we can’t replace his skill set. It’s just not something that can be done easily,” he reflected, recognizing the challenge ahead.
Fox, who previously won the Norris Trophy, shares the team point lead with Artemi Panarin, each having amassed 26 points this season.
Rangers’ manager Mike Sullivan reiterated that he doesn’t want Schneider, Gavrikov, or any other players to feel they need to overextend themselves in Fox’s absence. “The focus is on playing our game,” he said. “Injuries are part of the sport—we’re not alone in this.”
“Replacing a player like Fox isn’t straightforward, and I know it goes without saying,” Sullivan added. “We’ll devise a game plan tailored to our strengths and work towards success.”
In other news, Adam Edstrom exited practice early for evaluation of a possible lower-body injury. Meanwhile, veteran backup goaltender Jonathan Quick returned after a four-game absence due to a lower-body issue.
Taylor Radish was also absent from practice for personal reasons, leading the Rangers to recall forward Brennan Osman from AHL Hartford while designating Edstrom as day-to-day.
