Pope Leo calls for conversation instead of military intervention in Venezuela’s political turmoil.

Pope Leo calls for conversation instead of military intervention in Venezuela's political turmoil.

Pope Leo recently expressed his concerns regarding potential U.S. military action aimed at ousting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. He suggested that President Trump should favor dialogue and diplomatic measures instead. This appeal comes amidst escalating efforts from the White House against Maduro, particularly focusing on his alleged involvement in drug trafficking.

“We’re looking for a way to ease the situation; primarily, we want to prioritize the well-being of the people. In conflicts like these, it’s the ordinary citizens who bear the brunt of the suffering, not the politicians,” Leo remarked to journalists on a flight from Lebanon.

Amid rising tensions, Maduro has been vocal in rallying support against what he describes as ‘imperialist aggression,’ even wielding a sword during a protest. His regime faces mounting pressure from recent U.S. military deployments in the Caribbean and reported threats directed at his administration.

The Pope acknowledged the mixed signals he perceives from the U.S. government regarding its policy on Venezuela. He mentioned a prior phone call between the two presidents that seemed somewhat hopeful, yet there’s always the lurking possibility of military intervention.

In further comments, he stated, “While I think it’s important to explore dialogue, especially under economic pressure, if the U.S. opts for a different route, I believe alternative methods for enacting change should be considered.”

Conversing with 81 journalists aboard the papal plane, he articulated fears about the escalating tensions and uncertainty surrounding U.S. intentions.

Additionally, regarding the Holy See’s involvement, the Pope highlighted its role in confidential peace negotiations and emphasized the need for all involved parties to cease hostilities in Venezuela, the Middle East, and even Ukraine.
