Suspect Identified in Molotov Cocktail Attack on Federal Building

Federal authorities have unveiled new images of the individual accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail into a downtown Los Angeles federal building. The suspect, identified as 54-year-old Jose Francisco Jobel, faces serious charges following this incident.

Jobel, a local resident, is alleged to have engaged in an attack motivated by anti-immigration sentiments. His initial court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, where he will face charges of attempted malicious damage to federal property, as stated by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Esseri remarked on the broader implications of Jobel’s actions, highlighting how harmful rhetoric regarding federal law enforcement can incite violence. He mentioned, “Irresponsible statements by politicians and activists have real-world consequences and must cease.”

In the arrest, Jobel expressed frustration over federal immigration policies, referring to his actions as a “terrorist attack.” He reportedly shouted, “You’re separating families,” a phrase often heard from immigration policy critics. He then directed his anger towards law enforcement, urging onlookers to “start shooting!”

Details of the Attack

Authorities have noted that one of the images captured shows Jobel near the federal building’s entrance, while another features the incendiary device he allegedly used. It was revealed that the device did not ignite when attempted.

If found guilty, Jobel could face severe consequences: a minimum mandatory sentence of five years, escalating to a maximum of 20 years in federal prison.

Additionally, investigators claim that Jobel purposefully set his rented apartment ablaze earlier that day, before targeting the federal building. Fire officials discovered that an accelerant was involved in that fire.

The federal building, home to offices such as the U.S. Attorney’s Office and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), is where numerous undocumented immigrants are processed. Jobel reportedly threw the Molotov cocktails at both an employee entrance and another public door, which was busy with individuals waiting to go through security.

One law enforcement official emphasized the fortunate outcome of the event, remarking that no one was harmed by the incendiary device. Akil Davis, assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles field office, stated, “The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is committed to investigating and prosecuting those who target government employees.”
