Many social media users are claiming that starting the day with a glass of olive oil is their health secret. This practice, often mixed with lemon juice or water for ease of consumption, has gained popularity on platforms like Instagram and TikTok.

Followers of this trend report benefits like better digestion, reduced appetite, enhanced immunity, and healthier skin, although these claims are mostly anecdotal. For instance, one TikTok user mentioned feeling hungrier at times since she began this routine. She noted, “I’ve found I’m snacking less in the early mornings and afternoons, and I think it’s the olive oil.” Another echoed this, saying, “Despite the extra fat and calories, I haven’t gained weight.”

Yet, not everyone is convinced. Some Reddit users voiced skepticism, with one stating, “This trend is nonsense. There’s no solid evidence proving any positive effects beyond basic nutrition.” Another added, “Drinking something like this first thing in the morning might upset a lot of stomachs.”

On the flip side, Kavita Channe, a social media influencer based in Florida, expressed her belief that olive oil shots could aid digestion, reduce bloating, and boost energy and mental clarity. She recalled that when she stopped avoiding fat and focused on healthy sources, her energy improved significantly.

But is there any scientific backing to these claims? Dr. Will Haas, a family physician from North Carolina, acknowledged that while olive oil has its benefits, he sees more hype around this trend than legitimate health claims. “Extra virgin olive oil does have polyphenols and healthy fats that support various health aspects,” he explained. Yet, he added, “Most people would get similar or even better benefits from including it in their meals rather than taking it straight.”

If anyone decides to try this, Haas recommends starting with a tablespoon during a meal instead of on an empty stomach. He noted that combining fats with food can actually help with digestion and nutrient absorption, emphasizing the importance of quality, specifically cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil.

While olive oil is undoubtedly healthy, consuming it daily could also lead to unintended increases in calorie intake. Some people might experience nausea or digestive issues if they drink it straight away, especially in the morning. Ultimately, it stands that olive oil can be beneficial, but it’s most effective when part of a balanced diet.
