Cuellar Surprised by Pardon Announcement
Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, expressed his surprise regarding his recent pardon by President Trump. Speaking to Fox News Digital on Wednesday evening, he recounted receiving a media inquiry that initially confused him. He thought journalists were asking about the President of Honduras, not himself.
Cuellar noted, “I received an email asking, ‘Do you want to discuss this pardon?’ and I assumed they meant the president of Honduras. Then they clarified, and I realized they were talking about me. We were blindsided.
Charges Against Cuellar
The timing of the pardon coincided with Cuellar announcing his candidacy for re-election as a Democrat. Back in May of 2024, the Department of Justice indicted him on bribery and foreign agent charges, claiming he had accepted $600,000 from the Azerbaijani government for legislative favors.
The Justice Department stated, “Cuellar is suspected of receiving bribes from two entities: a government-controlled oil and gas company in Azerbaijan and a bank in Mexico City.” They alleged that in return for these bribes, he agreed to influence U.S. foreign policy to favor Azerbaijan.
Ongoing Controversies
Despite the serious allegations, Cuellar has not been convicted and continues to deny any wrongdoing. He has a history of voting against the mainstream views of his party, reportedly breaking with the Democratic consensus 62 times since the start of the 119th Congress.
Questions around whether he might switch political parties have loomed, but Cuellar suggested that the pardon and his re-election efforts were merely coincidental. “I was just busy watching the UT game that morning,” he explained.
Reaction to the Pardon
Cuellar refrained from speculating on why he received the pardon. He concluded with his gratitude, saying, “I want to thank President Trump for his actions. And of course, I thank God. It’s been a tough time, but now it’s back to work.”
