President Trump Pardons Former Honduran President
Former President of Honduras, Juan Orlando Hernández, expressed his gratitude towards Donald Trump for a recent pardon, claiming he was “wrongly convicted.” In a social media post, Hernández stated, “A deep thank you to President @realDonaldTrump for having the courage to stand up for justice.” He noted that the system was “weaponized” against him and that he was framed in a trial orchestrated by the Biden-Harris administration. He emphasized that there was little evidence against him, merely accusations from criminals seeking revenge, yet he maintained that his innocence shone through.
Hernández had been sentenced to 45 years in prison in June 2024 for conspiracy to distribute over 400 tons of cocaine, along with related firearms charges.
Former Attorney General Merrick Garland previously stated that Hernández leveraged his position to facilitate significant drug-trafficking activities. The Justice Department accused him of accepting millions in bribes from major drug organizations, which, they argued, underpinned his political ascent in Honduras.
In a twist, Trump’s rationale for the pardon cited the demand from “a lot of people in Honduras.” He elaborated that Hernández faced a “horrible witch hunt” while in office. Many Republican lawmakers, however, have voiced concerns regarding this decision, especially as the White House focuses on combatting drug trafficking off Venezuela’s coast.
Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) were among those who criticized the pardon. Cassidy questioned the logic of releasing Hernández while the U.S. pursues federal drug-terrorism charges against Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Tillis also raised doubts, pointing out the contradiction of being tough on one leader while showing leniency towards another, especially considering the ongoing investigations that began during the Trump administration.
