Kennedy supports Trump's power to carry out military actions against drug cartels

Sen. Kennedy Backs Trump on Military Action Against Drug Cartels

On Wednesday, Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) expressed his support for President Donald Trump’s ability to authorize military strikes against drug cartel suspects. He highlighted that confusion surrounding this authority is being propagated by some Democrats and “a few Republicans.”

In an appearance on Hannity, Kennedy criticized the reactions of some lawmakers, comparing them to Jack Nicholson’s character in “The Shining.” He remarked on their exaggerated responses, claiming they are overreacting and labeling the president a warmonger while telling the military not to follow orders.

The senator’s comments are set against a broader discussion in Congress regarding presidential war powers and the military’s role amidst drug trafficking concerns in America. His statements were prompted by a recent video in which several Democratic military and intelligence members urged service members to refuse “illegal” orders, a move met with backlash from Republicans who viewed it as incitement against Trump.

Amidst this contentious backdrop, Kennedy reiterated his belief that the military strike in the Caribbean falls within the president’s authority. This comes as lawmakers from both parties are demanding further examination of the legality surrounding a recent strike against a suspected drug-smuggling boat.

“Under Article II of the Constitution, it’s clear that the president can use military force without needing Congressional approval. He is the commander in chief,” Kennedy stated. He also pointed out that past presidents have exercised similar powers, mentioning instances of military action by Presidents Truman, Clinton, and George H.W. Bush without Democratic opposition.

His remarks reflect frustrations aimed at critics who conflate legal authority with moral considerations, questioning whether presidential action against drug traffickers is justified. “If the president were here right now, he would say, ‘These individuals are harming our children. We know who they are. I have labeled them as foreign terrorists, which supports military action against them,'” Kennedy explained.

He addressed skeptics regarding the identification of cartel vessels, asserting, “Well, they’re not out fishing. Our intelligence is exceptional.” Kennedy concluded by underlining the gravity of the situation, saying, “The notion that these drug dealers aren’t a threat to America’s national security is absurd. They are killing our children.”
