The management of the Bucks will have time to consider how the team functions without Giannis Antetokounmpo, especially as discussions arise about potentially trading the two-time MVP.
Antetokounmpo experienced a right calf strain during Wednesday night’s game and is expected to be out for about two to four weeks, as reported by ESPN.
This news follows ESPN’s earlier report indicating that Antetokounmpo and his representatives have started talks with the team about whether it’s better for both parties to remain together or part ways.
The injury occurred in the first quarter of Monday’s game, a home victory over the Pistons, when he fell awkwardly and had to leave the court.
Bucks coach Doc Rivers mentioned that Antetokounmpo had an MRI on Wednesday evening.
“I really didn’t know what to expect,” Rivers remarked. “I wanted to make sure the trainers were looking after him, and they ended up taking him to the hospital.”
He also noted, “There didn’t seem to be any contact involved. I thought the earlier collision might have thrown him off balance.”
This timeline means Antetokounmpo might not return until 2026. Given the ongoing talks between his camp and team executives, it’s reasonable to speculate about whether he will suit up for the Bucks again.
A couple of months back, ESPN indicated that the Knicks were the only viable trade option for Antetokounmpo, but discussions didn’t progress significantly.
Over the summer, Antetokounmpo and his team had meetings with Bucks officials regarding his future, particularly after the team let go of Damian Lillard and brought in Pacers player Myles Turner.
Though Bucks management seems to feel they’ve structured a competitive team, Antetokounmpo has shown some doubt following a disappointing first-round playoff exit last season.
Currently, the Bucks hold a record of just 10-13 following Wednesday’s game, leading to many questions about their ability to contend against teams like the Knicks, Pistons, and Cavaliers in the East.
The Bucks are 1-5 without Antetokounmpo, and a lengthy absence could place them in a challenging position as the new year approaches.
ESPN claims that clarity on Antetokounmpo’s future is anticipated soon, with one source suggesting that unless there’s a significant turnaround, reaching a decision may be complicated.
Should Milwaukee opt to consider trading him, the Knicks would likely be involved, although other teams could also come into play, potentially offering more attractive draft options.
Rivers dismissed any notions that Antetokounmpo has expressed a desire to leave. “There’s been no discussion on that front,” he stated. “I want to clarify this once again: Giannis has never asked for a trade. Not now, not ever. I couldn’t be clearer.”
