Pramila Jayapal States That Removing Somali Scammers Will Impact the US Economy Negatively

Jayapal Speaks Out Against Deportation of Somali Immigrants

During her appearance on MS NOW, Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal from Washington expressed concerns that deporting Somalis accused of defrauding welfare programs in Minnesota could negatively impact the U.S. economy.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has begun targeting undocumented Somali immigrants in the Minneapolis area after uncovering at least $1 billion in fraudulent activities, with some funds allegedly going to the terrorist organization al-Shabaab. Jayapal criticized President Trump’s remarks about these immigrants as “extremely dangerous.”

She stated, “That’s all a lie. The Somali-American community is significant in my state. In fact, working with this community is how I began to engage with immigration issues,” while speaking to Ana Cabrera on “The Ana Cabrera Report.” Jayapal also remarked on how the administration seeks to dehumanize immigrants by labeling them in derogatory terms. “Let’s be clear, regardless of political affiliation, many Americans understand that immigrants from around the world—including those from Somalia, India, Latin America, and Africa—have helped build this nation. Many still seem to struggle with accepting this reality.”

In reaction to the ongoing allegations, President Trump stated he would be revoking the “temporary protected status” for Somalis in Minneapolis, claiming that the refugee influx has “destroyed our country.”

Jayapal articulated her concerns about the fear amongst the community, pointing out, “I think the lawlessness and brutality of this regime is deeply hurtful and frightening to people. I’ve talked to individuals who, across the board, are so terrified that they avoid medical appointments or basic daily activities.”

Meanwhile, accusations of “systematic” retaliation against a whistleblower by Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz emerged, as the Justice Department is pursuing multiple federal fraud cases. Walz acknowledged that the state might be seen as “a magnet for criminals,” but emphasized the importance of not demonizing Somali residents during a recent NBC “Meet the Press” segment.

Jayapal concluded her argument by asserting, “It’s going to hurt us. It will definitely harm our economy, our democracy, and who we are as a nation.”
