New Orleans city council meeting turns chaotic as anti-ICE demonstrators clash

Chaos Erupts at New Orleans City Council Meeting Amid Immigration Crackdown

The New Orleans City Council meeting on Thursday turned chaotic when anti-ICE protesters flooded the chamber, shouting at officials and clashing with police over a significant federal immigration operation that has begun in southeastern Louisiana.

This unrest followed the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement of Operation Catahoula Crunch, a two-month initiative deploying 250 Border Patrol agents to New Orleans and its surrounding areas. Protesters dubbed it “Operation Swamp Clearance,” which ignited fierce backlash from immigrant rights activists and led to riots at City Hall.

By about 9:30 a.m., protesters had gathered outside City Hall, waving signs and using megaphones to express their discontent. Tensions escalated when police permitted demonstrators to enter the chambers.

Once inside, several protestors approached the podium, attempting to voice their concerns. However, city council members cut them off, declaring their comments irrelevant. The atmosphere soon became electric, with shouts of “Shame on you!” and “Coward!” filling the room. In a surprising move, city councilors abruptly exited the meeting, leaving the chamber to the protesters.

Approximately 30 to 40 demonstrators defied police orders to vacate. Officers began removing individuals, leading to some tense moments as they physically carried protestors out amidst furious outbursts from onlookers.

“Shame on him! He’s a peaceful protester!” one woman yelled. Another demonstrator confronted officers by the exit, crying out, “Our people are being attacked and you’re dragging him out? Who are you working for?”

Outside the barricades, protesters continued to push past officers and hurl obscenities as police established barriers. Notably, by Thursday afternoon, no arrests or detentions had been reported.

Back inside, chants rang out: “No to ICE! No to the KKK! No to racist America!”

The Department of Homeland Security has stated that Operation Catahoula Crunch aims to apprehend “criminal illegal aliens” who, according to them, benefit from sanctuary policies that prevent local authorities from cooperating with ICE. Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin asserted that such policies endanger communities by allowing dangerous individuals to roam free.

McLaughlin criticized the release of “violent criminals” back onto the streets, positioning Operation Catahoula Crunch as a necessary measure to restore law and order, and signaling intent under the current administration.

This clash reflects ongoing tensions, which began escalating after a protest earlier in the week when dozens gathered to oppose the impending immigration enforcement. Local broadcaster WWNO reported that previous demonstrations showcased emotional speeches that accused the DHS of traumatizing immigrant populations.

One protester expressed sorrow over lost family members, asserting, “You can’t quench the flame of someone who has already died.” Organizers have pledged to persist with demonstrations “as long as the swamp clearing operation continues.”

Currently, the DHS has not set a definitive end date for the operation, though it is said to last about two months.
