Mandela Barnes begins his campaign for governor of Wisconsin as the leading Democratic candidate.

Mandela Burns Enters Wisconsin Gubernatorial Race

Former Wisconsin Lieutenant Governor Mandela Burns, a notable Democrat, has officially launched his campaign for the governorship. This comes after his narrow defeat against Republican Senator Ron Johnson in the 2022 U.S. Senate race, where he lost by just one percentage point. Burns is now seen as one of the frontrunners in a crowded primary as he aims to replace retiring Governor Tony Evers.

However, Burns brings with him some considerable challenges. His previous campaign has laid bare his radical positions, which have already been weaponized by Republicans looking to shape perceptions of him across the state. Congressman Tom Tiffany, a Republican, recently remarked on Burns’ candidacy, asserting that his status as the Democratic front-runner illustrates how extreme the party has become. “Wisconsinites rejected him in 2022, and I think they’ll do it again in 2026,” Tiffany stated.

Past Vulnerabilities May Haunt Burns

Notably, Burns’ connection to groups that advocate for defunding the police and establishing sanctuary state policies may resurface as major issues in his campaign. He has a history with organizations that seek to ban law enforcement gang databases and has even championed legislation aimed at regulating certain types of ammunition. Fox News Digital has reported extensively on these connections, particularly his involvement with liberal nonprofits during his tenure as executive director of Citizens Action of Wisconsin.

Burns had expressed enthusiasm about these relationships, claiming, “We’ve been working together for a long time, and I’m excited to think we can finally get rid of Ron Johnson together,” on a podcast associated with Citizens Action.

Further adding to the scrutiny, during his Senate campaign in late 2022, Burns repeatedly pushed for significant reforms, including halving the state’s prison population and eliminating cash bail—issues that might complicate his bid for the governor’s seat. His past work as an organizer with a social justice group also highlights his focus on criminal reform.

Policy Goals and Future Directions

Burns has unveiled an ambitious agenda on his new campaign website, which includes a promise to ban assault weapons, uphold Roe v. Wade, and address economic policies tied to former President Trump’s tariffs. Notably, Burns emphasizes the importance of community safety in his campaign. In his remarks, he drew from personal experiences with gun violence, stating that he understands the need for safe communities deeply.

When approached for comments regarding his campaign, Burns firmly disagreed with the rhetoric surrounding defunding the police. He highlights a history of supporting law enforcement, asserting that he aims to partner with them to ensure community safety while contrasting himself with critics who seek to diminish police support.

As the race unfolds, it will be interesting to see if Burns can navigate his past while capturing the Democratic primary. His approach will likely be scrutinized closely, particularly given the criticisms and expectations from both his supporters and opponents.
