Simu Liu Calls for More Representation of Asians in Hollywood
Actor Simu Liu is urging Hollywood to be more mindful of racial representation in casting decisions, particularly advocating for Asian actors.
Born in China and raised in Canada, Liu recently took to social media to highlight the struggles of his fellow Asian actors in securing leading roles. He shared a collage of their sentiments, emphasizing the challenges they face.
“Put Asians in literally everything right now,” Liu said. He elaborated on his frustration, stating, “The amount of regression in our representation on screen is absolutely horrifying.”
“We’re fighting a deeply biased system, and most days suck.”
Concerns about Industry Bias
Liu pointed out that Hollywood tends to view Asian-centric films as “risky,” despite successful examples like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Crazy Rich Asians,” which grossed $174 million against a budget of $30 million in 2018.
“No Asian actor has ever lost a studio close to $100 million,” Liu expressed angrily. “But white actors will fail and still land lead roles. We’re battling a significantly biased system, and, frankly, it’s exhausting.”
Mixed Reactions to Liu’s Statements
Interestingly, Liu’s call for equity in representation received a different response compared to a few years prior.
Investigative journalist Robbie Starbuck highlighted that the film industry in Liu’s native China primarily employs Chinese actors. “There are very few white people. Is that some kind of unfair prejudice?” he questioned, suggesting that the situation may not be as one-sided as Liu suggests.
Furthermore, some responses on social media indicated that representation might not be the only priority. For instance, one commenter noted, “As an Asian, representation isn’t everything. A strong story and good casting matter more.”
A Grassroots Movement for Change
On the other hand, Liu found support from many who believe more Asian men deserve leading roles in Hollywood. One commenter remarked, “The story of Asians in America is profound and this narrative deserves telling.”
Another supporter lamented the lack of Asian leads in romantic comedies, stating, “Despite all the talent and appeal, it feels like we’re back to being mere side characters.”
Manny Jacinto, another actor featured in Liu’s post, expressed frustration over being cut from an upcoming Tom Cruise film. He emphasized the responsibility lies with Asian Americans to carve out their own narratives, insisting they can’t rely solely on others to change the status quo.
Other notable Asian actors mentioned include John Cho from “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” and Daniel Dae Kim from “Lost.”
