Governor Abbott discusses success in redistricting and response to CAIR with Glenn Beck

Texas Governor Greg Abbott Responds to Supreme Court Ruling on Redistricting

On a recent appearance with Blaze Media’s Glenn Beck, Texas Governor Greg Abbott expressed his views on the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling concerning a Republican-backed redistricting map. He also discussed the ongoing actions against the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).

On Thursday, the Supreme Court gave a temporary nod to a Republican redistricting plan in Texas, which could lead to the GOP gaining an additional five seats in the U.S. House of Representatives for the upcoming midterm elections.

Abbott described the decision as a pivotal moment for Republicans nationwide, saying it was a “complete vindication of the state of Texas and Congress.” The Supreme Court’s ruling reversed a lower court’s decision that required Texas to revert to earlier district lines from 2021.

He emphasized that the redistricting map was crafted to adhere closely to the U.S. Constitution and Supreme Court precedents, asserting it reflects the values of Texans. Abbott criticized the lower court for straying from established Supreme Court principles, stating, “The Supreme Court defeated the lower courts for violating its precedent.”

In his Friday interview, Abbott addressed the next steps regarding CAIR. Earlier this week, he sent a letter to Secretary of State Scott Bessent, urging the Treasury Department to investigate CAIR and potentially revoke its tax-exempt status, citing alleged connections to groups like the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas.

Abbott remarked, “CAIR has a historical connection to terrorism. If they want to avoid that label, we must cut ties with those designated by the federal government as sponsors of terrorism.” He argued that the organization continues to support terrorism, which he believes justifies not allowing them the benefits of a 501(c)(3) status.

In response, CAIR sent a letter to Bessent contesting Abbott’s claims. The organization accused him of fear and suggested that his actions are unconstitutional. They asserted, “Governor Abbott is afraid. He knows that his proclamation targeting CAIR-Texas violates the Constitution,” and mentioned previous legal victories against Abbott.
