Authorities are implementing a new approach to encourage a 550-pound bear to leave its hiding spot beneath a home in California.
The brown bear has taken refuge under the Altadena residence of Ken Johnson for over a week, a scenario Johnson humorously refers to as a “bear-like” situation.
Initially, Johnson attempted to drive the bear away with jelly rolls and various sweets, but those efforts didn’t yield any results. Now, officials from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife are utilizing fragrant sprays designed to attract bears.
“This compound has a strong caramel and cherry scent, which should encourage bears to move away from their current location,” explained CDFW spokesperson Cort Cropping.
According to Cropping, “Bears are certainly drawn to caramel and cherries.”
Johnson has also set up remote cameras around his property to keep an eye on whether the bear decides to venture out.
Once the bear makes its exit, officials plan to seal off the entrance to its crawl space.
“The bear hasn’t emerged yet,” Koppling commented, noting that the commotion might be making the bear nervous. It’s reportedly growling, too. “We had to request multiple news outlets to keep helicopters away. This bear tends to avoid people, so it’s important to be discreet outdoors.”
If the bear sticks around much longer, Johnson might end up with an unexpected roommate for the colder months. “He just wants to live here,” Johnson remarks.
The public has been advised to steer clear of the area.
