Minnesota Democrats Tried to Block GOP Lawmaker Addressing Somali Scandal Before It Gained Attention

Democrats Block Minnesota Lawmaker’s Push for Transparency

In April, a video surfaced showing Democrats in the Minnesota House blocking Republican Rep. Harry Niska’s attempts to propose amendments aimed at enhancing transparency regarding Democratic Attorney General Keith Ellison’s 2021 discussions with nonprofit officials connected to a fraud scandal.

Niska, seeking more clarity, had requested that Ellison’s office introduce these amendments after audio recordings emerged detailing Ellison’s conversations with representatives from Feeding Our Future, a nonprofit linked to COVID-19 fraud that adversely affected Somali communities in the state. On April 25, he attempted to bring these amendments to the floor but was interrupted during his remarks about the law.

“Recently released audio recordings reveal conversations between the attorney general and individuals who were later implicated in, and in some cases convicted of, the ‘Feeding the Future’ scandal,” Niska explained. He was then cut off by a Democratic lawmaker who claimed Niska’s comments were a personal attack against Ellison, but the speaker permitted Niska to continue.

Despite Niska’s attempts to share more about the amendment, he faced interruptions, with another Democrat questioning the speaker’s decision on a prior order. Niska’s efforts to address the amendment were stalled multiple times.

The recordings from 2021 feature meetings between Ellison and those individuals shortly before the FBI executed a search warrant, as reported by CBS News. Additionally, notable Minnesota Democrats, such as Rep. Ilhan Omar and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, have reportedly accepted political donations from Somalis involved in welfare fraud.

Federal prosecutors have managed to secure at least 59 convictions related to this fraud scheme, with more charges anticipated. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is now targeting undocumented Somali immigrants in the Minneapolis area amid the revelation of fraud exceeding $1 billion, some of which allegedly linked to the terrorist group al-Shabaab.

State officials have accused Minnesota’s Democratic Governor Tim Walz of systematic retaliation against a whistleblower who reported the fraudulent scheme. Meanwhile, the Justice Department is pursuing three federal lawsuits tied to the fraud. On NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Walz acknowledged that Minnesota has become “a magnet for criminals” but urged against demonizing Somali residents.
