Trump’s Strategies Toward Venezuela and Implications for Ukraine

President Donald Trump has faced challenges in polls regarding various issues recently. However, his proactive stance on Venezuela, including targeting drug cartel boats, has been a positive highlight. Interestingly, this approach could also play a role in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Understanding Venezuela’s situation is crucial. Like Iran, it acts as a client state of Russia, and Syria did too until the recent regime change. Trump’s actions have demonstrated that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s allies aren’t safe despite his defiance of U.S. power.

As noted by Peter Duran, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, Russia’s alliances reveal a pattern where they offer verbal support but provide minimal tangible help when these allies face significant threats. Duran suggested that Putin’s influence is waning, particularly due to the war in Ukraine and the U.S. sanctions. He mentioned that if Trump continues his current trajectory, Maduro’s hold on power could become untenable for Russia.

Retired General support for Trump’s strict measures against Venezuelan drug trafficking is notable. Steve Witkoff, involved in Trump’s Ukraine negotiations, recently commented on Maduro’s precarious position, seemingly hinting at a potential fall.

While Putin engages in armed conflict in Ukraine, Trump appears to be countering Russia’s global strength. Syria has improved relations with the U.S., while Iran has denuclearized and diminished its presence in Venezuela.

Interestingly, there have been reports of Russian cargo planes arriving in Venezuela recently. It’s unclear whether they were delivering supplies or perhaps preparing for a potential transfer of Maduro to Moscow, parallel to where al-Assad currently resides.

This current scenario emphasizes a crucial reality—Putin believed Ukraine was a stronghold of Russian influence. However, the U.S. has effectively curated broad support for Ukraine without deploying troops directly into combat.

For the past few years, Putin has committed significant resources to the conflict while hiring mercenaries but has achieved little success in shifting the stalemate. In contrast, Maduro could be ousted at any moment with little Russia could do to stop it.

This week, the updated National Security Strategy by the Trump administration reiterates a Monroe Doctrine-like stance prioritizing security within the Western Hemisphere. Yet, prioritizing domestic concerns doesn’t equate to being passive on the global stage; rather, it signifies an assertive stance.

Trump has a keen understanding of global dynamics. He recognizes that while direct confrontation with Russia might escalate tensions, exerting pressure on its troublesome client states is a strategic maneuver.

Duran likened Trump’s approach to an enhanced version of Theodore Roosevelt’s philosophy. Instead of traditional military force, Trump seems to favor demonstrations of naval power. For Maduro, an urgent decision could be to step down quietly before his situation worsens, as it’s unlikely that Putin can provide the rescue he might be hoping for.

Trump has effectively boxed Putin into a challenging situation. With Putin’s ambitions focused on reasserting control over Ukraine, there’s a risk of undermining his global standing and influence.

Germany has placed itself in a position where it must balance reclaiming what it perceives as its territory with the potential loss of its status as a global power.

As Trump continues to leverage his strategies, he’s demonstrated adept control of the situation, squeezing Russia’s hold as its geopolitical allies falter. The consequences of his moves, particularly regarding Venezuela, are yet to fully unfold, but they’re clearly aimed at weakening Putin, not just dealing with Maduro.

Trump’s foreign policy, described by Secretary of State Marco Rubio as transformative, suggests a return to prioritizing American interests in international relations.

In Venezuela, U.S. efforts are apparent, but the primary adversary is, undeniably, Putin. The dynamics in play may soon illuminate the potential for another detrimental loss for Russia in its troubled alliances.
