Pantone Announces 2026 Color of the Year
Pantone has revealed that the “Color of the Year” for 2026 will be “Cloud Dancer,” which is essentially a shade of white. The Pantone Color Institute shared this choice on Friday.
“During this transformative time, as we reconsider our future and our roles in the world, PANTONE 11-4201 Cloud Dancer offers a subtle white tone that represents clarity,” said Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of Pantone. “There’s so much noise around us; it’s hard to connect with our inner selves. The simplicity of Cloud Dancer helps us focus and shields us from outside distractions.”
Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the institute, described Cloud Dancer as a blank canvas. She expressed that it symbolizes a fresh start, urging us to shed old patterns of thinking and embrace new ideas. Its light, airy hue can foster creativity, allowing our imaginations to explore and generate innovative concepts.
Pressman mentioned to CNN that since 1999, Pantone’s intention in choosing the color of the year has been to reflect current cultural events through color. The shade of white was carefully selected, balancing both cool and warm undertones
“Naming colors is crucial. When you hear a color name, a specific image often comes to mind,” added Pressman.
She emphasized that selecting the right shade of white takes considerable thought. Different whites can evoke various emotions, and it’s more complex than it appears.
“A brighter white would strip away the authenticity we seek, resulting in a cold, sterile feel that conveys isolation,” she noted.
Pressman highlighted the color’s association with natural elements like feathers. As for this year’s marketing visuals, they feature a woman in white, appearing to wave in the wind against a backdrop of clouds.
“Cloud Dancer captures the balance between our digital future and our fundamental human need for connection,” Pressman stated.
Pantone has also released products in this signature white shade. Collaborations include items from furniture brand Joybird, wall hooks from Command, and white Post-It Notes. There’s even a “gentle white” Play-Doh celebrating 70 years of creativity.
However, the choice has drawn criticism from some, with opinions labeling it as dystopian, tone-deaf, or suggesting underlying racial implications.
One social media user expressed, “Pantone just announced the color of the year, and it’s lacking pigment. It’s white and doesn’t look appealing.” The commentary followed a viral discussion on the optics regarding this choice.
Social media users on TikTok chimed in, questioning if the announcement hinted at a change in manufacturing practices and making connections to socio-political issues.
“If this isn’t a color for the hood, it might be a flag,” one user remarked, referring to both the Ku Klux Klan and broader political meanings.
Last year’s Color of the Year was PANTONE 17-1230 “Mocha Mousse,” a rich brown tone akin to milk chocolate.
